Consultant Haematologist — Clayton (Monash)
Associate Professor Sanjeev Chunilal is Director of Laboratory Haematology at Monash Health and Unit Head of Haematology at Monash Pathology. He has a major focus on the diagnosis and management of disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis, with particular expertise in thrombosis and bleeding problems during pregnancy.
A/Prof Chunilal completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training in medicine and haematology in Auckland, New Zealand. He then undertook a clinical and research fellowship in venous thromboembolism at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, an internationally recognised centre for thrombosis research. He held a consultant appointment at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide before joining Monash Health in Melbourne.
He has contributed to Australasian guidelines on the treatment of venous thrombosis in pregnant and non-pregnant patients, including the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand (THANZ) guidelines for the diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolism, and on the reversal of warfarin anticoagulation. During the COVID-19 vaccination program he led Monash Pathology’s diagnostic testing for vaccine-associated thrombosis. He was also part of the team that designed and implemented a multidisciplinary anticoagulation stewardship service across Monash Health, improving the safety of anticoagulant prescribing in one of Australia’s largest health services.
A/Prof Chunilal is an active researcher with over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including studies on the treatment of distal deep vein thrombosis, cancer-associated thrombosis and anticoagulation in COVID-19. He is an investigator with the Monash Haematology Clinical Trials Unit in venous thromboembolic disease and novel anticoagulants, and is a member of the Monash Haemostasis and Thrombosis Research Group. He is an active member of THANZ and its clinical trials group, and of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).
